In his blustery acceptance speech, Donald Trump cast himself as the law and order candidate, telling Republicans gathered in Cleveland and those watching on TV that "there can be no prosperity without law and order." --"Our convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation," he said. "The attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities, threaten our very way of life. Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country."
Trump then delivered a surprisingly downbeat speech, citing a long list of problems he said confronted the nation at home and abroad -- from the shooting deaths of police officers, terror attacks, rising crime rates. He pointed to rising poverty rates, stagnant incomes and millions out of the work force, higher debt. He went around the world describing how "America is far less safe and the world less stable."
