5th District Rep. Robert Hurt (VA) to retire in 2016, Republicans say

Rep. Robert Hurt, R-Pittsylvania County, will retire in 2016, according to Republicans familiar with the congressman’s thinking.



A former member of the Virginia General Assembly, Hurt was first elected to Congress in 2010, defeating Democratic Rep. Tom Perriello. He represents Virginia’s sprawling 5th District, which includes Bedford and Franklin counties in its run from the North Carolina line to the Northern Virginia exburbs.

Bloomberg-backed group makes $1.5M ad buy in race for Colgan's Senate seat

A gun-safety group backed by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is now pouring $1.5 million into a crucial Northern Virginia legislative contest for the seat of retiring Sen. Charles J. Colgan, D-Prince William. The new ad buy backs Democrat Jeremy McPike and targets Republican Harry J. “Hal” Parrish II. It comes a day after the group announced it is buying $700,000 of political advertising to back Democrat Daniel A. Gecker and oppose Republican Glen H. Sturtevant in the race for the seat of retiring Sen. John Watkins, R-Powhatan.

Scott Walker taps Obenshain to lead presidential campaign in Virginia

State Sen. Mark D. Obenshain will serve as chairman of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s presidential campaign in Virginia, the campaign announced Friday.


The notice came the day after Walker appeared onstage in Cleveland with nine other White House hopefuls at the first Republican debate.
The rollout of supporters seven months ahead of Virginia’s March 1 primary is more evidence of the outsize role the swing state will play in the 2016 election.

Challenger to Va. House speaker looking for Brat-like upset in GOP primary

Susan Stimpson is hoping the anti-incumbent mood that helped a little-known economics professor unseat the second most powerful member of the U.S. House last year is still strong among Virginia's Republican voters.


The tea party favorite Stimpson is trying to upset long-time Virginia House Speaker William J. Howell in the June 9 GOP primary, a victory that would be of similar magnitude on a state level to Dave Brat's stunning defeat of then-U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor last year.

He has sent fliers to voters that boast Cantor has shut down the plans of President Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to “give illegal aliens amnesty.”
