A New York Times columnist offered her analysis of Donald Trump after a recent interview he did with the left-leaning paper. Her opinion prompted his rivals to demand the release of off-the-record audio that allegedly calls into question the businessman’s public views on immigration.

Ted Cruz on the Tea Party, George W. Bush, and the Worst Part of Running for President
On a recent summer evening following a speech to local Republicans in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Sen. Ted Cruz spoke with National Journal for more than an hour about the 2016 presidential race.
Cruz, known to rarely veer off-message, carefully evaded a series of questions about his friend and political ally Donald Trump. But the Texas senator offered his candid thoughts on the Bush family, the media coverage of his campaign, and the toll a presidential campaign takes on a young family. What follows are excerpts of that conversation, edited for length and clarity.

Republican presidential candidate unloads on Fox News during Fox News interview
Presidential candidate and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) is furious about Fox News' rules for the first GOP primary debate.
In a Fox News interview on Friday, Graham blasted the right-leaning network's "dumb" rules, which will limit the participants to 10 candidates polling the best in an average of the five most recent national polls.
"I think that this is a dumb way to weed out the field," Graham declared.

Katie Couric interviews Ted Cruz
Ted Cruz continued his verbal assault on last week’s historic Supreme Court decisions on Monday, saying the justices who ruled in favor of Obamacare and gay marriage “rewrote the Constitution.” “They joined a team, they put on bright-blue Obama jerseys and they rewrote the law,” the U.S. senator from Texas told Yahoo News’ Katie Couric during a live sit-down interview from Yahoo’s New York City studios. “Those decisions are a threat to our democracy.”

Ruben Navarrette: Halperin interview of Ted Cruz was painful
Imagine the following pep talk that a young Ted Cruz might have gotten from his father, Rafael, about 35 years ago.
"My son, I was tortured in a jail cell in Cuba, but I managed to come to the United States and build a life so that you could live your dreams. I grew up speaking Spanish, but I made sure you spoke English so you could go far. If you study hard, you can attend great universities. You can clerk for the chief justice of the Supreme Court, become a great trial lawyer and argue nine cases before the high court, get elected to the U.S. Senate, and someday run for president.
"Then, after all the family's efforts and sacrifices, one day, you can go on an interview program and be asked by a smug and clueless white journalist if you're authentically Cuban."
