Exit polls show all demographics shifted to GOP after 2012

With most of the results of the midterm elections now counted and confirmed (with a few notable exceptions in Alaska and Virginia), we can now take a look at the exit polls and see what they actually mean. Before and during the election, plenty of speculation arose as to the composition of the turnout and which demographics may have contributed more to Republican success. The Washington Post looked at a comparison between 2012 and 2014 and discovered that all demographics shifted toward the GOP, especially Asian-American voters:

Likely Millennial Voters Up-for-Grabs in Upcoming Midterm Elections, Harvard Youth Poll Finds

In Contrast to Four Years Ago, Half of “Likely” Young Voters Prefer a Republican-controlled Congress.
While more 18- to 29- year-olds (50%-43%) surveyed in the IOP’s fall 2014 poll would prefer that Congress be controlled by Democrats instead of Republicans, the numbers improve dramatically for the GOP when only young people who say they will “definitely vote” are studied. Among these likely voters, the IOP’s latest poll shows the preference shifting, with slightly more than half (51%) preferring a Republican-run Congress and 47 percent wanting Democrats to be in charge – a significant change from the IOP’s last midterm election poll in the fall of 2010 when Democratic control was preferred among likely voters 55 percent to 43 percent.

Conservatives defeat 3 GOP House incumbents

PORTLAND (AP) — Conservatives appear to be winning the fight for the soul of the Republican Party in the Oregon state House, decisively beating back establishment candidates Tuesday in three of four districts.

Rep. Jim Thompson of Dallas was defeated by Polk County GOP chair Michael Nearman, who had backing from social conservatives. Thompson’s support for a ballot measure that would legalize gay marriage was unpopular on the right. The district includes a wide swath of rural Benton County.

2014 Primary Election

Are you a Tea Party Republican?  Or do you consider yourself a moderate or pragmatist?  Wherever you fall in the liberal-moderate-libertarian-conservative spectrum, it’s still important to be involved.  The Oregon Republican Party Primary has a number of contested races this year:

Oregon House District 23 Representative between Mike Nearman and Jim Thompson (incumbent).

Oregon House District 58 Representative between Greg Barreto and John Turner.  

Oregon US Congregational District 2 Congressman between Dennis Linthicum and Greg Walden, the incumbent. 

The race for Governor between Tim Carr, Gordon Challstrom, and Bruce Cuff, and Dennis Richardson.

And of course, the race for Senator between Mark Callahan,  Jason Conger, Tim Crawley, Jo Rae Perkins and Monica Wehby.
